Mon, 3 December 2007 COSWAS REARS ITS HEAD DURING PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNSThe fierce Taiwanese Sex Worker rights group COSWAS has reared its head twice in the last three weeks. They demand wider ranges of political discussion are heard by the presidential candidates in this year’s election. They even have a political candidate! Both Taiwanese parties KMT (Kuomintang) & DPP (Democratic Progressive Party) candidates stand fixed in the single issue; how Taiwan will become a part of the U.N.; via reuniting with China or independently joining the UN. Meanwhile COSWAS refuses to have their ten year going labor struggle silenced. On November 15, the moment president Chen Shui-bian entered a downtown hotel in Taipei, several planted COSWAS members rushed onto tables & chairs, confronting Chen Shui-bian's current criminalization of sex workers. With the slogan "Grassroots Sex Workers cannot Survive," or 'Underground Sex Workers cannot Survive,' the activists lit up the dry hotel lobby with voices of dissatisfaction. Fortunately for the president, there were activists on the second floor as well, so more dissent sandwiched his placations. Most local mainstream media coverage was alarmist, & void of interviews that were taken after the action. One television report, however, did include the greater discussion of health, financial & social livelihood issues that formerly licensed Taiwanese prostitutes struggle with post the licensing ban. Two days ago, On November 27th, while Chang Chun-hsiung, president of the Executive Yuan, met with the Human Rights Commission, COSWAS held a press conference in front of that HRC meeting. Famous Taiwanese directors, Lin Jing-Jie & Hou Hsiao-Hsien joined the arms of several former sex workers & a posse of supporters, despite the pouring rain. The multitude of voices speaking out for the labor rights of sex workers boomed & the activists were also able to directly confront Chang Chun-hsing, who passed mid-conference! Finally, a passionate & charged chorus of a ballad previously sang by Mrs. Guan, made the press conference a dynamic presence that was covered by mainstream Taipei TV & newspapers. On to the film festival! For the next two weeks (see the Chinese calendar on: coswas.org) or English version attached with message), COSWAS hosts an internationally represented film festival in two different Taipei locations. They object to educate the Taiwanese public of sex worker realities, & reduce the incredible social stigmas they encounter. Sewn into the films will be media & political forums including international artists or activists (Carol Leigh, Mariko, blake nemec), & voices of labor & gender/sexuality movement organizers. So exciting! Media file disclaimer: libsyn demands the publisher upload a media file, & i'm not on my computer, only at the internet cafe, so this was the only thing I found on this computer! Ridiculous. |
